Reports suggest that Petrobras, Brazil's  state-controlled oil and gas multinational, provided sponsorship and support for some 2,300 projects in Brazil last year. In all, 554.8 million Brazilian reais  - USD 286 million - was invested in the environmental, social, cultural and sports fields. The data are contained in the company's Social and Environmental Balance, published on June 29th. Petrobras is the leading sponsor of cultural and social projects in Brazil, with projects being selected either publicly or by invitation. In the social area, the bulk of investment from Petrobras focusses on its Development and Citizenship programme, the goal of which is to contribute to local, regional and national development. The company's aim is to invest 1.3 billion reais - USD 670 million - from 2007 to 2012. Through public selection, the Development and Citizenship programme has allocated 27.5 million reais - USD 14.1 million - to seventy-two different projects.
